Mihaela Gheorgh  In Romanian, the basic meaning of the word inspiraţie is: inhalation of air into the lungs, the first part of breathing act. The English word "inspiration" corresponds to the figurative meanings of the Romanian one: emotional energy, complex of creative ideas; idea, solution to solving a problem unexpectedly come out of one's consciousness.

The etymons of the Romanian word inspiraţie are the Latin inspiratio and the French inspiration (which explains an older variety in Romanian - inspiraţiune [in-spi-ra-tsi-'u-ne].

Romanian also has a "lexical cluster" containing the Latin root "-spir-" from the Latin "spiritus": respiraţie (the entire breathing act), expiraţie (the second part of breathing act - evacuation of air from the lungs), transpiraţie (perspiration), aspiraţie (suction; and a figurative meaning corresponding to the English "aspiration") etc.

This is the part where I am in a kind of difficulty. I don't know what to choose. I'm not inspired.

I first wanted to talk about dadaism, a certain trend in European art and literature, from the beginning of the XXth century, which was invented by a Romanian poet - Tristan Tzara. He invented a method of creation by which any kind of inspiration was forbidden; he described his method as follows: take a newspaper, a pair of scissors, choose an article in the newspaper, cut it out, then cut every word, put all the pieces in a bag, mix...

Even the name of the trend was chosen by this method, using a Larrouse dictionary.

Dada was, in fact, a mystification, an anti-esthetic demonstration, expressing denial of any conscious ordering of the imaginative patterns. dadaists never applied their method sincerely, they have only simulated hazard. Even their most absurd compositions exhibit a certain intention from the author.

But I thought, then, that dada poets are not representative for Romanian culture, and now I think about Constantin Brancusi, a famous Romanian sculptor, active in Paris from 1904, author of an outstanding sculptural complex (located in Tirgu-Jiu public park): The Endless Column, The Table of Silence and The Gate of Kiss. (for the last two works I'm not sure I've found the best translation). Brincusi's work discovers the profound dimensions of Romanian folk art, it is widely inspired by it. The revelation of the Romanian ancient culture provides the artist not only with a simple morphology of the carving material, but also with a moral and philosophical structure. For instance, The Endless Column expresses, despite its genial simplicity, the constructive effort for preserving the meaning of human aspirations.
